  • OBJECTIVE

Reduce energy use and emissions by optimising voltage applied to suitable sites.

  • IMPACT

    Low

This will affect 100% of electricity consumption and can achieve up to 12% energy savings.

Description

Voltage optimisation can yield significant energy savings where equipment in sensitive to changes in voltage. Such equipment includes fluorescent and incandescent lamps, fixed speed pumps, uncontrolled refrigeration, and flow controlled HVAC systems. In facilities where voltage-sensitive equipment is present and is a significant driver of consumption in the facility, voltage optimisation may present an opportunity for energy savings.

A workflow for this action is:

  • Investigate voltage optimisation to reduce energy use and associated emissions at suitable sites.
  • Perform separate facility assessment analysing voltage data to determine feasibility.
  • Adjust voltage applied to identified sites.
  • Align with facility assessments and target highest energy consuming buildings first.

Tasks

What are we doing?

  • Todo30/09/2024

    Identify opportunities for Voltage Optimisation

Assess existing Council buildings and facilities by equipment, uses, occupancy and power consumption to determine whether voltage optimisation is likely to yield favourable return on investment in terms of energy and cost savings.

What has been done?

  • Done31.12.2021

Scope Voltage Optimisation for Council's Beechworth Offices (The Pines)

In 2021/22, Council's Capital Works & Waste team budgeted for voltage optimisation at Council's Beechworth Offices (The Pines), which is Council's largest electricity consumer. The Assets & Property and Environment & Sustainability teams investigated the suitability and return on investment and concluded that the budgeted funds would be better spent on ground-mounted solar.

Target audience

Responsible organisations

  • Assets & Property
Manages Council's assets and property, including maintenance and upgrades.
  • Capital Works & Waste
Manages new builds and major renovations.
  • Environment & Sustainability
Identify solar PV opportunities for new buildings and renovation / restoration works for existing buildings. Include renewable energy considerations in project scoping. Consult with E&S.
  • Indicative costs

[Council to insert price of quotes or past projects]

  • Indicative savings

Operational savings reflect % efficiency improvement.
