  • OBJECTIVE

Switch diesel fuelled vehicles to electric or hydrogen alternatives.

  • IMPACT

    Medium

Estimated 146 tonnes CO2-e between 2030 and 2035. Assuming 35% of LCVs/heavy vehicles are electric by 2035 (Estimating an additional 5% every year from commencement).

Description

  • Trial electric and/or hydrogen alternatives for Council's trucks.
  • Conduct life cycle assessment.
  • Upon success of the trials and life cycle assessment, replace vehicles in line with replacement schedule.
  • Fleet composition by fuel type: 100% EVs/hydrogen by 2035.
  • Set interim targets based on replacement schedule.
  • Allow for more options to come into the Australian market and for recharging/refuelling stations to be set up.

Tasks

What's left to do?

  • Todo30/06/2025

Trial electric and/or hydrogen LCVs and heavy vehicles

Trialing LCVs and heavy vehicles is an item in Council's Emission Reduction Plan.

Trialing facilitates user buy-in and informs procurement of vehicles that are fit-for-purpose.

  • Todo30/06/2026

Conduct a life cycle assessment for Council's LCV and heavy vehicles

This is an action item from Council's Emissions Reduction Plan.

Replacement schedule for existing fleet and plant and results of life cycle assessment will guide the rate at which lower or no emission vehicles replace existing ICE vehicles.

  • Todo30/06/2035

Transition fleet to low emissions LCVs heavy vehicles

This involves switching diesel fuelled vehicles to electric or hydrogen alternatives and is an action from the Emissions Reduction Plan.

    Abatement potential is 146 tCO2-e between 2030 and 2035.

Assuming replacement of ICE vehicles commences in 2030 and 35% of LCVs/heavy vehicles are electric by 2035 (Estimating an additional 5% every year from commencement).
