Despite the health and environmental benefits of utilising active transport modes to get to work, Australia has a very low rate of cycling and walking to work.

Encouraging staff to utilise active transport modes to get to can reduce kilometers driven for staff commuting.

    Several European countries offer cycling to work bonuses where staff are paid to ride to work, the same could be done here.

    Active transport users can encourage each other to get and stay active when they have support from other staff. There are also benefits also increased social interaction and knowledge sharing.

    Bicycle Australia promotes a National Ride2Work Day held in October.

    Provide amenities for active travellers

    Employees using active transport to get to work should be able to store equipment and clothing, securely store bikes, and should be able to shower if needed.

    Auditing of available facilities at Council workplaces should occur, followed by works to address any gaps.
