1.2. Reducing our building & facility emissions

Actions we're taking to reduce emissions from electricity, gas and water consumed at our buildings, facilities and streetlighting.

Council's buildings, facilities and streetlighting are a major source of our greenhouse gas emissions.

In our baseline year (2019/20), Council's buildings, facilities and streetlights produced around 32% of our total emissions.

Our infrastructure assets produce emissions through consumption of electricity, gas (natural and LPG), and water. The quantity and Scope of emissions vary according to the resource consumed and who is paying the invoices: gas produces Scope 1 emissions, water produces Scope 3 emissions (upstream), and electricity produces either Scope 2 emissions where Council pays the invoices or Scope 3 emissions (downstream) where tenants pay invoices.

Since July 2021, we have eliminated most of our electricity-related emissions by joining the Victorian Electricity Collaboration (VECO) with 50 other Victorian councils.
